Next up in our preview about who's coming is Helen from Ripples Crafts!
Ripples Crafts is an independent yarn dyeing business based in Assynt, in the Scottish Highlands. Helen, who is Ripples Crafts, is passionate about yarn and colour, and loves nothing more than to chat about the inspiration for her colour combinations - the inspiration being the landscape around her home as well as ideas she gathers from various travels around the country.
New line of yarn!
Helen will be bringing a new yarn base to the Edinburgh Yarn Festival. It is a Shetland / Hebridian mix which is grown in Scotland and spun in England on Victorian spinning equipment. It is a beautifully woolly yarn and is a sportweight.
New club: Yarn Notes from Assynt
Ripples Crafts started a new yarn club this year called Yarn Notes from Assynt. The focus of this club is particular locations in Assynt, where Helen and Ripples Crafts are based. Each month you receive a hank of 4ply yarn in a choice of 2 bases, a greetings card for you to use with a photograph of the chosen location on the front, and a comprehensive set of notes about the chosen location from various perspectives, including cultural, historical and archaeological.
At the time of writing only the January parcel has been received by members, but the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. If you wish to sign up for the remainder of the year while at the Festival, please speak to Helen and she will take your details. You will be able to pay for your membership at the event, or Helen can invoice you once she returns home.
Would you like to whet the appetites of our visitors by letting them know what you will bring?
Helen will have a variety of bases and weights, ranging from a choice of fine laceweights through a wide range of 4ply yarns and sport weight through to aran weight, as well as a number of samples for you to look at and even try on if you wish. The colours available will range from semi solid shades through to variegated and will include the very popular range of Assynt Storms colours - each one unique and unrepeatable.
In addition to all of this, there will be a number of items exclusive to the Edinburgh Yarn Festival. One is a special colourway dyed only for Edinburgh Yarn Festival. This will be available only for the duration of the Festival and only as long as stocks last, so if you want a long lasting memento of the festival make sure you get yours early in the day from the Ripples Crafts Stand.
As a special project for Edinburgh Yarn Festival, Helen has also been working alongside 2 Edinburgh designers who have created patterns which will be available exclusively at the Festival. The designers, Clare Devine and Jo Kelly, have each chosen a different base and used it for their design, and one will be using the Edinburgh Yarn Festival colourway. The designs will not be available for general release for some time after the Festival, so get your hands on a copy of the patterns at Edinburgh Yarn Festival from the Ripples Crafts stand.
Helen always has a special basket which contains end of line yarn bases or experimental colours which are offered to customers at a reduced rate and offer those new to hand dyed yarns the opportunity of trying the yarns at a reduced price.
Prepaid orders collection at EYF
Helen is happy to bring pre-paid orders to the festival for customers who'd like to save on the postage and collect their yarn from her during the event. Helen can accept card payments for your purchases during the Festival too, which is a help if you want to save your cash to spend on stalls who don't take card payments. Furthermore, Helen will be happy to take your details and pre-payments should you wish to join the yarn club. And if there is a colour which you would love to have but which is sold out or there are insufficient hanks available for your project, just ask Helen and she will be happy to dye it for you and post it on to you.
Please get in touch with Helen directly if you have any queries. Contact details on her website.
