Katherine Lymer - Finishing Touches

  • The Risk Factory 20 New Mart Rd Edinburgh, EH14 1RL UK (map)

We love knitting and while happy to follow patterns, instructions for achieving a more pleasing, professional finish aren’t always included.

In this small class, we will learn how to achieve a more polished “handmade” (as opposed to “homemade”) appearance to our work by (1) working symmetrical decreases and discussing placement of shaping within the row, (2) re-writing shoulder-shaping instructions in patterns to avoid stepped, holey edges and using, instead, short-rows to create a smoother, neater finish, (3) grafting together live stitches by knitting and sewing.

Level: Confident beginners and intermediate knitters

Skills needed: Casting on and off, knit, purl, simple shaping.

Materials to bring: 3.75mm/US size 5 needles (straight or circular, whichever you prefer for working back and forth)
4mm/US size 6 needles (straight or circular, whichever you prefer for working back and forth)
DK yarn (same as that used for the homework)
Darning needle
Knitting bag with your usual accessories

Any "homework"?: Yes: Two small, stocking-stitch samples will need to be prepared in advance of the class. Full details will be provided in January.

Class size: 4

Note: This class also runs on Friday morning.
