Karie Westermann - Faroese Shawls

  • Water of Leith Centre 24 Lanark Road Edinburgh, Scotland, EH14 1TQ United Kingdom (map)

In this class we will be looking at the way Faroese shawls are constructed and how their unique shaping allows for contemporary lace motifs.

The wonderful knitting traditions of the Faroe Islands have recently become a big hit with knitters. While colourwork has seen much attention, Faroese shawl knitting has enjoyed a revival. Far from being dainty special occasion objects, Faroese shawls are big, warm everyday items that sit well on shoulders.

Together with Scandinavian knitting designer Karie Westermann, you will make a mini-shawl that will teach you about a rekindled knitting tradition and also teach you valuable skills for a full-sized shawl.
